The perfect break
We decided to experiment with a weekend away from Sydney, and boldly chose Tasmania, with an early flight to Hobart on Friday morning, back to Sydney Sunday afternoon. We picked up a hire car, dropped in to Hobart for a morning coffee, then drove to Richmond with its quaint shops and the great Pooley Wines homestead (lunchtime wood fired pizza with the superb Matilda champagne and their top drawer pinot noir). Beautiful drive on to Orford and the magnificent Sanda House, run by Greg and Kerry with a relaxed style that is supremely engaging (also the best scrambled eggs with truffle oil in the history of breakfasting). The house is historic, charming, comfortable and enchanting. Perfect base to visit Maria Island, sit on the fine white sand at Spring Beach eating local oysters washed down by a crisp riesling. Comfortable rooms with the sleep of the contented. Back to Hobart for the farmers' market on Sunday and a high noon flight back to Sydney. Phew! It sounds rushed but was actually one of the most relaxing holidays we have ever had. Sanda House offers an edited slice of Tasmania in its own right, or can be the perfect base for longer journeys, but what could be better than sitting on the verandah reading your book and feeling the glow while the aroma of home made bread wafts towards you.
